‘Belief alone won’t keep the lights on:’ 50 year-old market could close without support
As Bexley Natural Market reminded its patrons in a social media statement on Friday, the long-standing community co-op was on the front line of selling local, whole food decades before it was cool to do so.
But without regular patronage, the Market warned, it may not reach its 50th birthday.
“We exist because people believed a better food system was possible, and for 49 years, we’ve done everything we can to live up to that promise,” the statement from Bexley Natural Market reads. “But belief alone won’t keep the lights on. We need action.”

The Market noted that its new board of trustees and general manager have been able to pay overdue bills and keep the store running, but this alone does not appear to be not enough to sustain the East Side co-op.
“In order to re-stock and full revitalize the store for the long term, we need your week by week support,” the statement reads.
Bexley Natural Market is located at 508 Cassady Ave. The Market is hosting a membership drive, where existing members can renew, and others are encouraged to sign up. You can also support the Bexley institution around the holidays by ordering a local turkey through them.
