Columbus pizzeria that once saw months-long waitlist for orders announces closure

A local pizza concept that once drew months-long wait times for a single pie is set to close.

According to a social media post from Wizard of Za, the concept, which is located inside of Fusian In Clintonville, will close after service today.

The pizzeria, which began as a passion project by Spencer Saylor, quickly became a massive hit, with Saylor taking orders behind a months-long wait list. It launched a brick and mortar home inside of Fusian in late 2020, before later opening a store in Dayton that closed in the spring of 2024.

Saylor, who according to his LinkedIn profile is now a managing partner at Northstar Cafe, sold Wizard of Za to Paceline Restaurants on January 1, 2022.

Here’s what Saylor had to say about the closure:

I was surprised by the news in that I found out about it on social media, like every other person did, but ultimately wasn’t surprised by its closure. It’s sad to see something so special, that I helped create, close after the impact and inspiration it created in such a difficult time as the COVID pandemic.

When I sold the business in 2022, everything changed. The recipes, the ingredients, the branding, the oven, the team – they even tried to change the narrative and who truly started it. When the focus shifted from the product and the people, unfortunately the community now has to lose out on magic of The Wizard of Za.

I’m forever grateful for the experience, the people I got to meet, and being shown the true meaning of love & community from Central Ohio during my time with the business. I hope the team members who were helping run it til the end can quickly land new opportunities on their yellow brick roads and I wish the team at FUSIAN the best in their next endeavors.

According to Eric Rosenberg, the owner of Fusian and Paceline Restaurants, the changes made after Wizard of Za was purchased were in the interest of cutting down on wait times and making the experience more approachable to diners hoping to stop in without planning their visit. They did this by offering pizza by the slice and later even sandwiches.

Rosenberg said the closure came about for two main reasons: the difficulty of operating multiple restaurants under one roof and the departure of Dylan Jones, who Rosenberg said took over the Wizard of Za operation after Saylor sold the concept.

“Dylan Jones took the reigns when he left and also did an incredible job. That original DNA kept it going,” Rosenberg said. “Dylan is now a chef at speck and has broadened his culinary expertise which we were happy to support. He’s super talented and still helped us with pizza stuff.”

It hasn’t been finalized yet, but Fusian hopes to bring a new pizza concept into the space. It’s not clear what that concept is or when it will open just yet.

“It was time for us to go back to original business plan of supporting an amazing pizza maker, theres so many around!, rather than just doing it ourselves,” Rosenberg said. “If there’s an opportunity to continue the Wizard brand or recipes we are definitely open to it if that new team is interested but ultimately we want to get back to the original success of putting a growing entrepreneur into business.“
