David Portnoy visits multiple pizzerias; here are the details
“It was nuts, man. He’s actually super cool,” said Danny Phillips, owner of Bobby Jo’s Pizza.
Bobby Jo’s only opened three weeks ago inside Donerick’s Pub at 5225 N. High St., but after David Portnoy, the Barstool Sports founder known for One Bite Pizza Reviews, put it out there that he’ll be visiting Columbus this weekend, loyal fans of Bobby Jo’s commented on his post and told Portnoy he had to check out the new pizzeria.
“I just knew he was coming,” laughed Phillips. Apparently, his intuition was so strong, that he opened up Bobby Jo’s at noon all week instead of the usual 5 p.m. And yesterday, it finally happened. Portnoy ordered the usual cheese pizza.
Phillips is keeping the score a secret until the video comes out. But, “Honestly we’re stoked about the score. I used to watch his videos all the time. I was ordering frozen pizzas he would review during the pandemic, so it was a really cool full circle moment. Only being open for 3 weeks, it feels really cool just being mentioned.”

Portnoy also frequented an older establishment yesterday. He ordered a large cheese pizza from The Pizza House, at 747 E. Lincoln Ave., which was established in 1961. Rodd, the current owner, said it was a good experience for the whole team, even if Portnoy referred to it as Chicago tavern-style pizza, when it’s indeed, Columbus-style. Rodd also commented on the fact that Portnoy was surprised it wasn’t crispy. He said that their cheese pizza is the hardest to get crispy because the cheese starts getting burnt before the crust turns crispy, due to the massive amount of cheese they add.
Portnoy scored Pizza House a 7.4. “We’ve already started to get a bump from it,” said Pizza House. This morning, they were already busier than usual with people placing orders.
