FDA recalls 150,000 lbs of radioactive food that could cause cancer & burns sold at this Ohio-based grocery store

Believe it or not, it happened again.

In August, the FDA issued a recall for “radioactive shrimp” sold at Walmart under the Great Value brand. And now, a month later, even more shrimp was found to contain a harmful, man-made, radioactive substance in Kroger grocery stores in multiple states and cities, including Columbus, Ohio.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced this week that 49,920 2-pound bags of Kroger raw colossal EZ Peel Shrimp, along with 18,000 2-pound bags of Kroger Mercado cooked medium peeled tail-off shrimp, and 17,264 1.25-pound bags of AquaStar raw peeled tail-on shrimp skewers have been prepared, packed, or held in “unsanitary conditions” where they could have been contaminated with cesium-137.

Cesium-137 is a chemical element that emits radiation as it breaks down. The FDA said that exposure can it can cause burns, radiation sickness, cancer, and death. Unfortunately, it’s a man-made substance that’s used around the globe in medical and industrial devices, so trace amounts leak into our soil, air, and, well, shrimp (and other food).

Please look at the FDA’s extensive list of the recalled shrimp before you consume any bought at Kroger.
