Former Chapman’s Eat Market employee launching new Clintonville sandwich shop this month

While Chapman’s Eat Market is gone, a former chef for the recently-closed eatery is planning a new venture of his own, with some help from his family.

Christopher Beardman, alongside brother and father, is opening Fat Arnie’s Sandwich Shop on Oct. 20. The new eatery will be located at 4404 Indanola Ave., inside of Rafter’s Beer Pub.

“The motivation came from wanting to start a family business. The goal was always to do something together and this was the perfect opportunity to bring all our talents together to create something special,” Beardman said.

The concept, which was named after the family’s late dog, who was described as “a chunky boi,” will offer a handful of serious sandwiches, empanadas, a burger and even pork belly bites. The menu, at least for opening day, will be kept on the simpler side, in order to allow Beardman creative freedom with the recipes.

And while he was a member of the Chapman’s crew when the restaurant closed for good this summer, much of the new eatery’s offerings were also informed by the time he spent in Cuenca, Ecuador. In Central America, he opened up two different taquerias, one of which still operates today.

According to, Fat Arnie’s would be open to a brick and mortar expansion if the timing and space is right, but for now, they’re focused on getting their sandwiches off the ground. And into your mouths.
