Founder of 57-year-old Columbus deli passes away


Harold “Hal” Block passed away on January 17, 2025, at the age of 91.
Hal was born in Coney Island, New York, eventually moving to Columbus and opening a small bagel shop in 1967, which turned into a big deal here. Block’s Bagels has been successfully operating for nearly 60 years, using recipes given to Hal by is uncle who owned a popular bakery in NYC.

Although the original Block’s Bagels location has closed, among others, there’s still a location at 6115 McNaughten Rd. which has been there since 1980. “His dedication to his work was unwavering, often working seven days a week, even into his nineties. Hal’s generosity and commitment touched countless lives, and his presence in the community was felt far and wide,” said Hal’s obituary.
Block’s Bagels closed on Sunday, January 19 to honor Mr. Block. They are now open again.
