Happy Pączki season! Here’s where to get these one-a-year-only Polish donuts here in Columbus

Not only are we going to tell how to pronounce these delicious, yeast-raised donuts covered in powdered sugar and filled with a fluffy custard or sweet jelly (PUNCH-kee), but we’re also going to tell you where to find Pączki here in Central Ohio.

These pastries, which kind of resemble a jelly-filled donut, originated in the Middle Ages as a way to use up rich foods before Lent started. Today, they’re still a celebratory dessert for Fat Tuesday in many Polish-American communities. Originally, they were filled with pork and fried in lard, made with ingredients forbidden during Lent, such as butter, eggs, milk, and animal fat. But as Lent, and “forbidden ingredients” evolved, the recipe changed to include sweets and sugar.

These Columbus institutions are carrying on the Pączki tradition today, but only for a limited time:

Rose Dough Donuts
They just opened up preorders, available or pick-up Saturday, March 1 or Tuesday, March 4. Rose Dough, located in a ghost kitchen at 1400 Dublin Road, is offering cream filled or jelly-filled Pączkis.

My Old World Bakery
True to their name, this Westside bakery is one of the few Columbus spots that serves up fresh, housemade Pączki each year. While many bakeries offer an extremely limited window of sales on the pastries (we’re talking a few days), these Pączkis are currently for sale, and will be offered daily through Fat Tuesday. If you really need some on a certain day, though, call ahead. They sell out quickly.

Resch’s Bakery
Open since 1912, Resch’s has become something of an eastside institution in Columbus, offering a slice of the past with their traditional pastries and numbered-ticket service. They continue to offer some of the finest Pączki in the city every year, but they usually only sell them on Fat Tuesday (which is March 4 this year).

Buckeye Donuts (Campus and South Side location)
As it has in years past, the campus donut spot will be offering Pączki  on the Monday before Fat Tuesday and the holiday itself (March 3&4). Look out for varieties like vanilla, blueberry, and even lemon custard!

Kolache Republic
Biscoff-flavored custard, anyone? Kolache is offering blueberry and Biscoff Pączki starting today, the 26th, until March 2nd.

The Original Goodie Shop
This Columbus staple is offering Bavarian cream, apricot, strawberry, and raspberry Pączki, only available for walk-up purchases on Fat Tuesday. However, if you have a large gathering or special event, you can custom-order them all year round!
