It’s Back: Infamous chili-inspired ice cream returns to stores, scoop shops

Jack McLaughlin

When I first tried Grater’s Skyline-Chili inspired ice cream—an experience you can watch here—the first thing that ran through my head was just how much it reminded me of pumpkin-spice ice cream.

And (not to say I told you so, but also kind of to say I told you so) guess what’s now returning for the fall?

Graeter’s announced yesterday that, starting Oct. 1, its famous (or infamous) Skyline Chili-inspired ice cream flavor, Skyline Spice, has returned.

“We thought this collaboration with Skyline Chili was going to be popular, but we were blown away by the overwhelming demand and  how many people genuinely loved this flavor,” said Graeter’s CEO, Richard Graeter in a press release.. “Our scoop shops and grocery stores couldn’t keep pints in stock longer than a couple hours and online orders poured in from across the country. When Skyline Spice Ice Cream completely sold out in just over a week’s time, we knew we had to bring it back for more people to enjoy.”

It will be available in participating Skyline Chili locations, Graeter’s scoop shops and in pints at Kroger stores throughout the Cincinnati and Dayton areas.

As someone who has tried the ice cream, if you’re looking for a chili-filled flavor bomb (for some reason), that’s not what this flavor is. It tastes very little like chili, and is actually—and ironically—very subtle, with a creamery base ice cream accented by warm baking spices (where it really recalls pumpkin spice) and crunchy oyster crackers for texture. At first, it sounds weird—and almost purposefully bad—but I legitimately enjoyed it.
