Jeni’s releasing mysterious all-black ice cream to be featured in NYC art exhibit; Flavor still a secret

Your guess is as good as ours regarding the flavor of Jeni’s new all-black ice cream, because they’re keeping it a secret for now.

The flavor, called Opaque, is a collaboration with New York artist CJ Hendry, and will be part of a SoHo gallery show Aug. 15-17.

According to a Jeni’s social media post, the partnership began last year when Jeni’s reach out to Hendry, who gave the Columbus-based ice cream concept one instruction:

“Make an all-black ice cream that would be the centerpiece of a monochromatic exhibition in New York City.”

Here’s what Jeni’s said about the collaboration:

“Agreeing to the challenge, we added one more parameter: The flavor had to be stop-you-in-your-tracks delicious. Meaning, no gimmicks. No shock value. No activated charcoal or unnatural colorings. Instead, this ice cream would be an excavation of flavor — an all-senses-engaged peeling back of layers upon layers of tastes, textures, and aromas.”

Jeni’s hasn’t released what flavor Opaque is yet, but is encouraging social media followers to guess on their pages.

If you’re not in New York, don’t worry. Opaque will be available in Jeni’s scoop shops and online beginning Aug. 14.
