Largest grocery store chain in U.S. plans to remove artificial food dyes and food additives from store brand
Major grocery stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Aldi are taking steps towards eliminating artificial food dyes and additives, and the largest grocery chain in the United States is following suit.
Walmart announced that by 2027, synthetic food dyes and 30 other ingredients such as preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and fat substitutes will be eliminated from its store brands sold in the United States. This would mostly affect their private-label food brand, Great Value, and their snacks, baked goods, sugary drinks, salad dressings, frostings, and more. Their prepared foods ingredients would change as well.

In place of Yellow No. 5 and No. 6, Walmart said they’d be using substitutions such as paprika and annotto, which still gives a yellow hue. Instead of Red. 40, Yellow No. 6 and Blue No. 2, Great Value Fruit Spins Cereal will be made with beta carotene, annatto, and blue-green spirulina and juice concentrates.
Sam’s Club also said it would be removing more than 40 ingredients (like dyes and aspartame) from its Member’s Mark products by the end of this year.
