New ice cream shop serving waffle ice cream sandwiches, chocolate-dipped cheesecake opens

The city of Johnstown is launching an ice cream concept that’s far from your everyday scoop shop.

Mastodons Ice Cream Co. officially opened for business on May 14. The new concept is located at 60 S. Main St. in Johnstown. According to owners Joanna and Matthew Daskivich, its name pays homage to the unique history of the Central Ohio city.

“In 1926 a farmer in Johnstown dug up Mastodon remains here. There are historical signs on the edges of town that display this. Matt and I thought it would be a cool name to spark conversation and celebrate Johnstown’s past,” Joanna Daskivich said.

The new scoop shop plans to regularly feature 16 ice cream flavors, including Majestic Milky Way, Strawberry Pretzel Dessert, Bear Claw, Lemon Cheesecake Bar and more.

And speaking of cheesecake, the new Johnstown concept also offers chocolate-dipped cheesecake (in addition to birthday cake-dipped cheesecake), loaded ice cream nachos, ice cream flights, waffle ice cream sandwiches, plus vegan and gluten free options.

“I have dreamed of owning an ice cream shop for at least 25 years now. I love the idea of making people happy with delicious ice cream and being able to suggest something that they may not think of,” Joanna Daskivich said.
