Travel guide names the best ‘5 hole-in-the-wall restaurants’ here in Columbus

From dive bars serving up some of the best burgers in town, to a corner restaurant in a historic neighborhood that still makes traditional turtle soup, here are Columbus’ best hole in the walls, according to the national travel guide All American Atlas.
Johnnie’s Tavern
3503 Trabue Rd.
This is a (614) Media Group staff favorite, with many on our team claiming the dive bar serves some of the best burgers and fries around – but looking at it from the outside, you wouldn’t even know they’re open, which is definitely the true meaning of “hole in the wall.”

Fat Baxter’s
1794 W. Mound St.
What looks like a Hilltop home with a fun patio, is actually a spot for hot & fresh pork rinds and buffalo wings that have “the perfect level of crispiness,” according to All-American Atlas. The travel guide also suggests ordering the chili cheese coneys and the corned beef hash & eggs.

The Walrus
143 E. Main St.
“The unassuming storefront, complete with a glass garage door, adds to the quirky charm of this hidden gem,” said the guide. They suggest ordering a Maple Burger and their signature fries.

The Olde Mohawk
819 Mohawk St.
Turtle soup, anyone? (Uhm, I’ll pass, but many Columbus residents come here just for this rare dish!). The old restaurant sits on a historic corner in German Village, offering tavern favorites on their gorgeous patio.

Over the Counter
5596 N. High St., Worthington
This retro diner serves up breakfast classics, but also lunch favorites, like patty melts and burgers. “With its nostalgic ‘50s charm and welcoming service, Over the Counter is a delightful place to dine,” said the guide.
