Travel writer for ‘The Times’ seeks out to find the best burger in town; ‘Columbus makes a case for being the home of the hamburger’
“I have come to Columbus, Ohio, on burger-related business,” said Felicity Cloake, a travel and food writer for The Times.
What brings her to Columbus, you may ask? Well, she says that Walter Anderson, one of the co-founders of White Castle, pretty much invented the concept of a hamburger, right here in Columbus, based here since 1936. “This, in my opinion, gives Ohio’s state capital ample right to boast about its beefy heritage,” she says.

On Cloake’s hunt for the best burger in town, she joins up with Bethia and Andy Wolf, who run Columbus Food Adventures. Here’s her itinerary:
- Ringside
- Ray Ray’s
- Joya’s, which she said “proves so gloriously rich and juicy it ends up all over my T-shirt”
- Swenson’s
- White Castle
- Thurman Cafe
Even though Cloake sought to find the best burger here, she doesn’t really say which one won her over. “You can argue until the cows come home over the true home of the hamburger but you can’t deny that this under-the-radar destination packs some serious beef in the dining department.”
