Upscale Latin & Mexican fusion restaurant opening in former Market Italian Village space

A moody, sensuous vibe is making its way to Italian Village, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Mezcla is taking over the former home of The Market IV, which unexpectedly closed at 1022 Summit St. back in 2022, with the prime restaurant space sitting vacant ever-since. While there will be an entirely different menu in Mezcla, much of the beloved atmosphere will remain the same. “It’s a beautiful place. It would be silly to gut everything and start over,” said Garrett Talmage, the first-time restaurant owner who plans on opening Mezcla this Spring.

Talmage has worked in kitchens since he was 15, constantly inspired by his Venezuelan and Latinx coworkers who infused their dishes with flavor bombs. Working as the former executive chef of Cosecha, which closed in the pandemic, as well as the executive chef at Nada, Talmage is ready to open a place of his own.

The new restaurant will boast Mexican-centric and Latin fusion cuisine – expect an intentional, refined, curated experience, where everything is made from scratch. “We’re not going to offer a giant menu where people question, ‘How is this even fresh?’” Talmage emphasized. With a constantly rotating menu based on what’s in season and even what mood the chefs are in that day, guests can expect an innovative take on a Mexican restaurant. No sombreros, no skulls – Talmage will keep the space elevated, and doesn’t want to caricaturize the Mexican culture.

While The Market’s wood-burning oven was made for cooking pizzas, Talmage and his small team of chefs will utilize it to offer plenty of delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes, like a picadillo taco using wood-fired seitan, and meat-forward options as well, like Spanish Iberico ham.

We’re already looking forward to enjoying a cocktail out on the patio this summer.
