4 Columbus-based retail chain locations could be saved from closure after company files for bankruptcy

It’s not just you – it does feel like we all have whiplash at this point with anything surrounding Big Lots’ bankruptcy and store closings.

After Big Lots filed for bankruptcy last year, hundreds of locations were expected to close. An acquisition gave the Columbus-based retail chain some hope, but that fell through towards the end of last year.

But back in January, Gordon Brothers Retail Partners acquired Big Lots, and the deal included a transfer of ownership of 200 to 400 of Big Lots’ storefronts to Variety Wholesalers, keeping the Big Lots name.

Court documents filed last week suggest that Variety will operate 27 Big Lots locations in Ohio if the court approves. Four of these locations are in Central Ohio and were initially announced to close, but it looks the like following could now remain open:

  • 2837 Winchester Pike in Columbus
  • 3961 Hoover Road in Grove City
  • 6300 E. Livingston Ave. in Reynoldsburg
  • 1700 E. Main St. in Lancaster

Since filing for bankruptcy back in September of 2024, 500 Big Lots stores have already closed. Big Lots filed a notice back in December stating that employees at the 4900 E. Granville Rd. headquarters would all be terminated.
