96 year old business could be closing & demolished to make way for hotel

“It’s not like we’re struggling or anything,” explained Brian Killilea, who has been running his parents’ greenhouse for the past couple of years. “It’s just that my family is ready to retire.”

DeMonye’s Greenhouse, located at 2500 Airport Dr., has been around since 1929. In 1965, Brian’s father bought the business from Mr. DeMonye after working there since he was in 8th grade. But Brian’s family is ready to let it go to seek some rest in retirement.

“We were interested in seeing the value,” he said, “so we hired a realty company to see what it’s worth. Multiple people were interested.” And apparently, the 5.73-acre lot is worth $1.8 million.

But only if it’s demolished.

Rocky Point Partners offered the $1.8 million asking price, “But it’s all contingent on if they can demolish and rezone it,” explained Brian. The zoning application, which is yet to be approved, says that Rocky Point seeks to demolish and rezone for a five-story, 125-room hotel.

The deal has been delayed, but if approved by The City, Brian said he “doesn’t know” if he would move the business elsewhere. “All I’m doing is running this business for my mom until we know we can’t anymore,” he told 614Now.

DeMonye’s Greenhouse plans to stay open until it’s officially purchased and demolished.
