After filing for bankruptcy and closing hundreds of stores, retail giant reopening 5 Central Ohio locations

What do you think is in the local news more these days: cars crashing into buildings, or Big Lots’ bankruptcy case?

Yesterday, we wrote about the former (a car crashed into a Dairy Queen), but today, we’ll be giving you the scoop on the latter.

After filing for bankruptcy last year, some Big Lots stores are set to reopen as soon as this week. In a recent press release, the retail giant announced that almost 220 stores across six states would be opening again, now that Variety Wholesalers acquired Big Lots and their two distribution centers.

The openings are coming in waves. Nine stores have already opened across the country, and on May 1, another 50 other Big Lots stores will open. The press release says that even more reopenings will be happening through early June.

“We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week, we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall,” said Lisa Seigies, Variety Wholesalers CEO in the press release.

Fortunately, 28 Ohio stores are included in these phases of reopening, including 5 here in Central Ohio:

  • 6300 E. Livingston Ave., Reynoldsburg, Reopening May 1
  • 4260 W. Broad St., Reopening mid-May
  • 2837 Winchester Pike,  Reopening mid-May
  • 3961 Hoover Rd., Grove City,  Reopening mid-May
  • 1700 E. Main St., Lancaster,  Reopening mid-May

It’s worth noting that four former Big Lots in Ohio are set to reopen as Ollie’s Bargain Outlets, but none of those are in Columbus (Bowling Green, Chardon, Findlay, and Middleton). A former Pickerington location will be a HomeBuys store, located at 1171 Hill Road North.
