Ohio school administrator resigns after selling school’s lawnmowers on Facebook Marketplace

An Akron Public Schools (APS) employee resigned Wednesday–according to an Ideastream Public Media report–after his involvement in a scandal that saw him sell multiple APS lawnmowers on Facebook Marketplace, allegedly for profit.

Steve Keenan, former APS facilities director, was originally suspended at the Sept. 15 School Board meeting.

According to the meeting agenda, he allegedly sold 11 APS lawnmowers to a vendor without board approval. He then bought seven of the mowers that had been traded—he paid $5,693.32 for these under a “friends and family” discount—before re-selling five of the seven mowers on Facebook Marketplace for $14,700.

The Ideastream report, which claims to have obtained a copy of Kennan’s resignation letter, noted he claimed the district’s list of equipment to be traded in was created by other employees and approved by the APS office of business affairs.

The report also stated Keenan believed he was being retaliated against for speaking out against former APS officials.
