Central Ohio farm has $6K worth of pumpkins stolen, and they’re not alone

Earlier this year, the Central Ohio-based Sam’s Pumpkin Patch was tapped as one of the 20 national finalists for the USA Today-based 10Best Readers Choice award for the nation’s best pumpkin patch. But even national recognition can’t prevent the popular farm from theft.

According to owner Terry Dunlap, he discovered 275-300 “premium” pumpkins missing from one of his farm fields on Sept. 23. He believes the theft occurred somewhere from Sept. 23-Sept. 18, but he’s unsure of the exact date.

Offering what he stated was a “conservative” estimate, Dunlap said that he believes they would have sold for a total of $6,.000.

“That’s just the retail value, though. It doesn’t include what I invested in the seed and fertilizer and spray,” Dunlap said.

What’s worse, the local farmer wasn’t alone. Dunlap told 614Now that Puffy’s Pumpkin Patch in Circleville had pumpkins stolen, and Madmax Farms in Delaware narrowly escaped a theft.

Dunlap said there’s unfortunately not much he can do in the way of added security, due to the cost of logistics of constantly policing such a large plot of land.
