Central Ohio student competing in Scripp’s National Spelling Bee

I most definitely couldn’t spell words like psammophile and schreneschnitte, but it’s very possible Sebastian Gil can.

Gil, a seventh grade student from Concord Township, will serve as Central Ohio’s lone representative at the 2025 Scripp’s National Spelling Bee.

The Bee will take place May 27-29, with the finals (which typically includes around 12 competitors) being broadcast from 8-10 p.m. on May 29.

Gil is one of 15 total Ohio spellers who will compete in a field of 243 total participants, each one vying for the $52,000 grand prize (with $25,000 for second place and $12,000 for third).

This year will serve as the 100th anniversary of the Scripp’s National Spelling Bee.
