City attorney sues landlord who allegedly left East Side apartment-dwellers without heat during ‘winter freeze’

Columbus City Attorney Zachary Klein and his Property Action Team have filed a lawsuit against the owners of the Life at Edgewater Landing apartments for their alleged failure to provide heat to East Side apartment-dwellers during extreme winter cold conditions.

According to a press release from Klein’s office, the lawsuit, which was filed in environmental court, claims a boiler failure at the Life at Edgewater Landing forced tenants to go without heat during the “frigid temperatures.” In response, the city evacuated dozens of individuals to temporary housing.

“Working heat and running water is the bare minimum expected of landlords operating in the City of Columbus. If you fail to meet either of these—or other—basic needs and units need to be vacated, landlords should foot the bill and fix the problems, or get out of the business of being a landlord,” Klein said in a press release.

The city is seeking to recoup the cost of relocating the apartment residents. Under the city’s new Relocation Assistance Code, landlords are obligated to cover relocation costs in the case of emergency evacuation.
