Columbus City Council approves major utility rate hikes for city and suburbs

Sav McKee

Last evening, Columbus City Council approved major utility increases for residents and business owners in Central Ohio.

Starting January 1, in just a little over a month, customers of Columbus Water and Power will see an increase of rates by 18%, power by 13%, sanitation by 8% and stormwater by 2%. This results in a $100-$200 increase annually of residential bills in the city and suburbs.

With the extra funds from the increased rates, The City of Columbus is planning to build a new $2.3 billion water plant, the fourth in the city.

Electric customers who utilize the Division of Power instead of AEP Ohio, which is about 19,000 residential homes, will also see a 13% increase.

A discount for low-income customers will still be in place.
