Columbus fails Air Report, ranking as one of the worst cities for particle pollution


Although Columbus is good at a lot of things, having clean air apparently isn’t one of them.
In fact, our city received a big, fat “F” on the Air Report by the American Lung Association. They graded us as having the 54th worst in the nation for annual particle pollution out of 208 other metropolitan areas.

This grade is shocking, considering we received a B on last year’s report.
The American Lung Association looked at exposure to ground-level ozone air pollution and particle pollution, like smog and soot, from the years 2021-2023. If you remember the summer of 2023, Columbus was under Air Quality Alerts multiple days from the Canadian wildfire smoke, even causing our municipal pools to lose thousands of dollars.
