Columbus Zoo zebra dies after colliding with gate

Jack McLaughlin

The Columbus Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its zebras.

According to a social media post from the Zoo, a Zebra named Paula was recently found dead by her Columbus Zoo care team after “colliding with a gate in her habitat,” which is located within the Heart of Africa exhibit. It’s not clear when exactly the animal died.

“As a ‘flight species,’ zebras can startle easily, and while this was a tragic accident, our team has already added new visual barriers and additional safeguards,” the Columbus Zoo wrote in a social media post.

The Zoo will also be performing a necropsy.

“Paula was cherished for her spirited personality and the joy she brought to guests and staff alike. Her passing is a difficult loss for all of us, especially the Heart of Africa animal care team who worked so closely with her every day,” the Zoo’s post reads.
