Downtown building built in 1969 demolished to make way for affordable housing

Sav McKee

The former United Way of Central Ohio headquarters, built in 1969, is currently being demolished to make way for more affordable housing in Downtown Columbus.

The headquarters, located at the intersection of S. 3rd and Mound Streets, will be transformed into a five-story building with 82 apartments, according to the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA), who invested $29 million into this project. The affordable housing will be centered towards middle and low-income families, as well as people with disabilities.

CMHA’s project, called AspireCOLUMBUS, aims to create affordable housing for the tens of thousands of Columbus residents in need of somewhere to live. They’re committing to either building or buying at least 500 units every single year for this initiative.
