FDA: Broccoli brand sold in Ohio Walmart stores could contain potentially deadly contaminant

Broccoli sold late last year in Walmart stores in 20 states, including Ohio could contain a potentially deadly bacteria.

According to a Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announcement, produce distributor Braga Fresh issued a voluntary and precautionary advisory due to the possibility that their 12 oz bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets could potentially contain listeria bacteria, specifically the Listeria monocytogenes species, which causes listeriosis.

According to the FDA, “Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” although the administration noted healthy individuals typically only suffer short terms symptoms like fever, headache, nausea and more,

A sample of the product in a Texas facility tested positive for the bacteria, although no known cases of listeriosis have been reported in connection with the broccoli. The advisory notes that the potentially contaminated broccoli is currently past its “best by” date, but customers who froze the product should be aware of the advisory.
