Man reports fake hostage situation to Highway Patrol, gives description of his own car as suspect vehicle

It was an interesting weekend for the Circleville Post of Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), one that even included a fake hostage situation.

According to OSHP Sergeant Ryan Purpura, just before noon on Jan. 18, Jeffery Corby, 44, approached a trooper at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Circleville Post claiming that another person was being held at gunpoint inside of a vehicle parked at the Circleville post.

After investigating, however—the situation involved a “large law enforcement response,” according to Purpura—it was determined that the suspected vehicle had no one in it. A “thorough follow-up investigation” reached the conclusion that no hostage situation had ever occurred.

“The incident was fully contained and at no time was there any danger to the public. The Ohio State Highway Patrol takes false reports very seriously, as they divert critical resources from true emergencies,” Purpura said.

Perhaps the strangest aspect of the case, though, is the fact that the Corby originally told OHSP that the vehicle where the hostage was being held was his own car, the one he drove to the Circleville Post and had parked there while reporting the incident.

Corby was arrested and charged with inducing panic.
