Ohio Attorney General approves petition that would eliminate property taxes in Ohio

A petition to completely abolish property taxes has been approved by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

The petition, called “Abolishment of Taxes on Real Property,” would add a new section to Article XII of the Ohio Constitution, seeking to give seniors over 65-years-old discounts, or eliminate property taxes altogether.

It was put together by a group from Cuyahoga County called The Ohio Citizens for Property Tax Reform. “Our mission is to inform the public on skyrocketing taxes, and the impact high taxes have placed on everyone. And to bring public advocacy and reform to property taxes,” says their website.

Property taxes fund public services, such as schools and first responders. The Ohio Citizens for Property Tax Reform states that part of their 3-step plan is for a “total overhaul of the funding mechanism for public education in our elementary and secondary schools.”

In order for this measure to be considered on a ballot, the Ohio Ballot Board must certify it. If they do, petitioners must gather a certain number of signatures from registered voters, collected from half of Ohio’s counties 65 days before the election.
