Ohio-based grocery stores cutting nearly 1,000 jobs after announcing 60 store closures

In an effort to simplify operations, a grocery store headquartered in Cincinnati announced Tuesday that they’re cutting nearly 1,000 jobs.

According to Grocery Dive, an internal company memo from Kroger’s CEO Ron Sargent said these reductions are part of structural changes to its administrative teams across the U.S., aiming to simplify Kroger and refocus priorities.

This latest round of job cuts marks the third round of layoffs at Kroger in just eight months. This indicates, “The company is working to rebound following its failed merger attempt with Albertsons,” said Grocery Dive.

With the layoffs, Kroger is planning to reinvest that money by lowering prices at their stores, adding hours, and “bulking up its real estate capabilities.”

Earlier this summer, Kroger also announced their plan to close 60 stores. This came just months after former chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen resigned, after the board found his conduct “inconsistent with Kroger’s Policy on Business Ethics.” A huge investigation found that Kroger has allegedly been price gouging and selling customer data.
