A woman in Eastern Ohio was killed by a deer she had rescued.

According to a press release from the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, 64 year-old Jodi Poger was found dead outside of her home in Stewartsville, after being attacked by a deer that was living on her property.

The Sheriff’s Office said that she likely became trapped in a pen that housed a male deer. Her family members told police she had recently rescued the animal and was trying to domesticate it.

The release says that, while “Family members attempted to intervene and dispatch the animal prior to the arrival of law enforcement to reach the victim,” they were unsuccessful.

The deer was later killed by police to “ensure scene safety.”

According to her obituary, Poger was passionate about rehabilitating injured wildlife, and had spent the last 12 years rescuing deer.
