Ohioans will need to submit their photo ID to watch pornography online starting this fall
Ohio Republicans passed a pornography age verification ID law as part of the state budget, which will be implemented this fall.
Starting September 29 of this year, Ohio will join 25 other states who have passed similar legislation requiring pornographic websites to verify the age of any user through “reasonable age verification methods.” This includes the use of a photo ID that verifies someone is 18 years or older, where the user will have to upload to the website.

Critics of this bill worry that age-verification requirements present a huge risk to the privacy of adults, especially with potential leaks and data breaches which could reveal users’ private browsing data, such as what type of porn they are watching. Critics also argue that people could be driven towards “underground” cites that don’t regulate age, and these sites are less likely to regulate and remove illegal content, such as revenge porn or child sexual abuse material, etc.
