Popular retailer with 3 locations in Central Ohio files for bankruptcy, citing tariffs and slow consumer spending

Amid slower consumer spending and tariffs, a popular home goods retailer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

At Home, originally based in Texas, announced that it would initially be closing 26 “underperforming” stores in 12 different states, expecting the premises to be vacated by September 30.

In Central Ohio, there are three At Home stores: one in Reynoldsburg, one in Hilliard, and another near Polaris. However, it appears those stores are safe from the chopping block in the initial phase of closures. The company said that more stores could be closing in another phase throughout the entire bankruptcy process.

At Home is in nearly $2 billion of debt, and through this restructuring process, they entered an agreement with lenders to help eliminate a substantial amount of it. $200 million in funding is being provided to At Home to keep stores afloat and operating during their bankruptcy process, too.

“While we have made significant progress advancing our initiatives to date, we are operating against the backdrop of an increasingly dynamic and rapidly evolving trade environment as we navigate the impact of tariffs,” said CEO Brad Weston in a public statement. “The steps we are taking today to fully de-lever our balance sheet will improve our ability to compete in the marketplace in the face of continued volatility and increase the resilience of our business for the long term.”
