Progressive new funeral home, the state’s first to apply for a liquor license, opens for business

Earlier this year, a Columbus funeral service that plans to reinvent the way we say goodbye in Central Ohio opened its doors for business.

According to owner Hunter Triplett, Evergreen Funeral, Cremation, and Reception held its grand opening at the end of January. It’s located at 1855 E. 17th Ave., in the former Maramor Chocolates factory.

And while opening a funeral service inside of a former chocolate factory is unique, that’s only the beginning for Evergreen.

Triplett’s concept aims to offer progressive alternatives to typical funeral and cremation services. This includes acting as the first funeral parlor in the state to apply for a liquor license, and allowing guests to hold services in one of their multiple in-house event spaces, while bringing their own food.

“A lot of people don’t really find the value in traditional funeral service anymore, where you go for 1-2 hours and then depart,” he said. “With the rise of cremations and celebrations of life, people are moving on from traditional services. A lot of people I’ve dealt with are going to event centers, going to eateries and food establishments to celebrate. The concept was to capture that and keep it in-house.”

While Evergreen hasn’t obtained its liquor license yet, it has started the application process. Triplett told 614Now it will appear as an item for the 2025 General Election on Nov. 4.
