Sharpshooters approved to kill deer at night in this Central Ohio suburb; residents concerned

Starting just in a couple of days, sharpshooters will be targeting the wildlife in many of Worthington’s residential areas.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be in charge of the operations, but they’ve only notified residents that it will happen “after dark.” The sharpshooters will be targeting deer specifically in 27 areas of Worthington as a way to “manage” them, but no specific times or addresses have been announced. However, if a property is 200 feet away from a site, they are being notified by mail, according to the City’s website.

Many residents took to social media to express their concern. Some explained they moved to that area of Central Ohio for the wildlife; others are worried a tragedy could occur. Worthington City Council maintains that the increasing deer in this area pose a risk for safety, causing millions of dollars of damage to plants and landscapes, as well as high vet bills and 150 car accidents involving deer.

The meat from the killed deer will be donated to local food banks.
