Twice-suspended local ‘celebrity’ dentist under investigation after patient dies

Sav McKee

A Central Ohio dentist office’s website boasted, “You can get caught up [with dental work] in as little as two visits while you snooze through it all in LaLa Land.”

After a patient died on February 16, three days after being sedated for routine dental work, like a cleaning, fillings, upper and lower dentures, and extractions, the description above has since been removed from Grove City Dental’s website.

On that day, around 8:00 a.m., Michael Beesler went to his dentist appointment to see Dr. Scott Shumann, who sedated him while undergoing the aforementioned dental procedures. Police reports show that around 12:05 p.m., a defibrillator and CPR were used on Beesler, trying to revive him after he stopped breathing.

Witness statements obtained by 614Now say that dental assistants were concerned about Beesler’s breathing, and they accused Dr. Schumann of ignoring the signs. “His pulse was dipping in the 80s…patient did not look good, vitals low,” said one written witness statement to police. “I called immediately for Dr. Schumann.”

Another witness statement provided to 614Now by The Grove City Police Department then says that when Dr. Schumann was notified about Beesler’s oxygen levels dropping, “Dr. Schumann said, ‘He is breathing’ and that, ‘He was fine.’” The witness then claims that, “When telling him numbers are dropping, it was shrugged off. Patient was sweating, turning blue, then pale white,” around 11:00AM. The witness said that she personally got eye level with the patient, noticing no movement in his chest, and by this time, no pulse or oxygen was showing up on their monitor. “He [Dr. Schumann] then asks us to draw up a reversal syringe, which expired in 2021…then he kept shaking the patient.”

They called 911 and did CPR until medics arrived. After being transported to Mount Carmel Grove City, Michael Beesler passed away at age 61, three days after the incident. He is survived by his wife and four children.

According to Ohio State Dental Board records, Schumann has already had his license revoked twice. In 2002, he lost his license for 5 months for “dependency on alcohol or other drugs,” then in 2015, his license was revoked again for three months for the same reason. After his five-year probationary period, his license was fully given back to him in 2021.

Dr. Schumann is under investigation, but he is still practicing. Grove City Dental’s website says that he’s a respected “celebrity dentist,” a 6-Time Best-Selling Author, and he makes TV and radio guest appearances.
