Video: Columbus driver stops on highway to not miss exit, turns on blinker, causes massive pile-up

As a Chicago transplant, I’m typically the first one to pump the brakes (pun intended) on the jokes regarding bad Columbus driving. A recent video has me reconsidering, however.

A roughly one-minute clip posted to the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Facebook page yesterday shows a crash caused in the southbound lanes of I-71 at the I-670 interchange. The crash occurred on April 30.

At approximately the 15 second mark, a red vehicle drives into the frame and comes to a complete stop in the center lane of 71. Appearing to have missed their exit onto 670, the car turns on its right turn signal while waiting for an opportunity to cut across traffic to the 670 exit.

Two cars then stop behind the vehicle, before a third strikes the cars, leading to a multiple-car pileup. The original red vehicle makes it safely to the 670 exit.

“When you are driving along a major interstate and you miss your exit do you:

A) keep driving and get off at the next one

or

B) come to a complete stop, cause a multi-car rear-end crash and then drive away

HINT: The answer is NEVER B. Do not be this driver. Actions like the one in the video are extremely dangerous to yourself and other drivers,” The ODOT post reads.
