How Columbus Africentric senior Ny Harris leads on and off the basketball court
As Nyajah (Ny) Harris enters her final season of girls basketball at Columbus Africentric, she is ready to lead by example. To Harris, being a senior player means she must:
“Lead the team because you know you’re the most experienced, so lead the under classmen. Help them out, encourage them.”
Harris has been playing basketball since first grade, playing point guard or shooting guard. Her heart lies with defense, where her competitive edge can have a little fun. It’s when she has “the most passion on the court.”

For Harris, the oldest of three siblings, playing basketball also teaches life lessons.
“It helps you like mentally and physically, to like never give up on anything,” Harris told 614NOW. “It gives you more experience in life, like in different situations that would happen so you can grow as a person. It helps you grow on and off the court.”
In addition to her leadership on the girls basketball team, Harris is also a student council representative, and a member of the National Honor Society.
“Being involved in clubs like student council and National Honor Society is important to me because it builds leadership, teamwork, and social skills,” said Harris.
It’s essential to Harris to focus on being well-rounded, and committed to making a positive impact in her school and community.
Outside of academics and basketball, Harris enjoys art as well, pursuing classes like drawing and painting studio. To balance all her responsibilities as a busy high school senior, Harris leans into time management.
“For me, basketball actually takes up most of my time, so I just know this is what I actually want to do so I’m putting my all into it.”
In the future, Harris hopes to play basketball after high school. She joins this season with two other senior leaders at Africentric, Jeniya Bowers, and Jae’Veyonna Brown.
“Ny is a hard worker and will be a leader for us this upcoming season,” her coach, Coach Harris, told 614NOW. “This is her last go round with high school basketball at Africentric, and this will always be a place she can call home.”
