Former Central Ohio mayor, advocate for historical preservation, passes away
Westerville’s first female mayor and longtime city council member has passed away.
Mary Lou Prouty, who served as the city’s first female mayor and on the city council for twenty years, passed away on May 21. She was 82.
According to the Westerville City Council archives, Prouty served as a council member from 1981-2001, serving as mayor for four terms. She also operated as vice-mayor and vice-chair of the Westerville city council throughout her years of service.

She was honored by the city in 2015 as a “Champion” of historic preservation in Westerville for her work in preserving historic Uptown Westerville and advocating for the preservation of the Everal Barn and Homestead, which is now a popular attraction and event space in Westerville’s Heritage Park.
