130-year-old Columbus company acquires California brand in $400 million deal
A well known Columbus-based company with headquarters in Westerville announced this week that they’ve entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a California-based brand.
The Marzetti Company, a local sauce brand that has roots traced back to 1896 when Italian immigrant Teresa Marzetti opened her first restaurant near Ohio State University, has acquired Bachan’s Inc., a fast-growing, California-based Japanese Barbeque Sauce, for $400 million using cash on-hand and some additional financing.

Bachan’s BBQ sauces are known for being not only delicious, but also authentic, with clean ingredients sourced straight from Japan.
“We are very excited to share our plans to acquire Bachan’s as a strategic extension of our portfolio that will further strengthen our position in the dynamic condiment and sauce category,” David A. Ciesinski, The Marzetti Company’s CEO told Business Wire. “This transaction will reinforce Marzetti’s position as a global leader in sauces by adding a premium brand that is exceptionally well aligned with evolving consumer preferences for global flavors and better-for-you products. We look forward to welcoming the Bachan’s team to the Marzetti family!”
