17-year-old German Village-area restaurant abruptly closes

A lauded restaurant known for “farm-to-table” comfort classics announced their sudden closure over the weekend.

Skillet, located at 410 E. Whittier St., posted a sign on their door that reads, “After 17 wonderful years serving the Columbus community, we are writing to share the bittersweet news that Skillet will be closing its doors.”

Owned by the Caskey Family, they did not share why they closed in their announcement, but expressed tremendous gratitude for Columbus and their staff.

For some, this is completely unexpected—there’s been a line out the doors almost every weekend for brunch for almost two decades. For others…well, maybe they saw the writing on the wall.

Take for instance, a Reddit post from three months ago.

“What Happened to Skillet in German Village?” it reads. This Reddit user, beckheck, said in the post that the 17-year-old restaurant served them tap water in plastic cups and charged them $1.50 for it, charged them another $1.50 for hot sauce, and that their meal was served on a plastic food tray on top of wax paper. “It tastes like someone reheated the memory of food. It’s horrible and it’s not cheap,” said the post.

Dozens of other users commiserated on recent experiences there, with the consensus that Skillet hasn’t been the same as we once knew and loved. “The OG Skillet from the get-there-before-10am-on-Saturday-for-breakfast days were magical,” said Reddit user Twixlen. Maybe, perhaps, that is the Skillet we will always remember.

Skillet is still offering their hot sauce, coffee, and other retail items online, which you can find here.
