Barstool’s Dave Portnoy ranks Ohio pizzeria among the best pizzas across the country

The Barstool founder and pizza connoisseur, Dave Portnoy, known most for his “One Bite Pizza Reviews,” has been around Columbus a few times. Whether he’s here taunting the Ohio State Football coaching staff or trying out some great local pizza, Portnoy tends to have some iconic moments in the Buckeye State.

A list posted by Instagram user aaronknowshomeloans on June 30 revealed Portnoy’s top-rated pizza restaurants outside the Pizza Belt—roughly Philadelphia through New York and up to Massachusetts. Of the list, only one Ohio pizzeria ranked.

Emelio’s Restaurant, a Columbus family-owned and operated pizza joint since 1960, was rated an impressive 8.1 by Portnoy and ranks 14th among the best pizza places outside of The Pizza Belt and across the country.

In Portnoy’s 2025 review of Emelio’s Restaurant, the devoted Michigan fan said, “There’s a win for Columbus!”

Located at 574 Georgesville Rd, Emelio’s is known for its thin-crust, square-cut pizza. The restaurant reposted the list, captioned proudly: “Carrying the Flag for THE State of Ohio!”
