Co-owner of Lindey’s buys historic German Village restaurant

The Old Mohawk is getting a new owner. And a new look. And even a new menu.

NCR Ventures (behind Easton’s Bar Italia and many more successful restaurants in the Cleveland area), has officially purchased the 126 year-old German Village restaurant for $1.7 million, located at 819 Mohawk St.  The restaurant group’s owner and founder, Rick Doody, is the co-owner of Lindey’s.

Doody told 614Now that The Old Mohawk owners reached out to him first. “It’s a great building on a great corner,” he said. “And I just love everything that’s happening in Columbus.”

He’s planning on spending millions of dollars in historic renovations and a menu revamp, similar to the project of buying and refreshening Lola’s Bistro in Chagrin Falls, he said. 

While The Old Mohawk may have a new feel, its old charm will remain. The staff is staying as well, and as for now, the name of the restaurant won’t be changing any time soon. The changes will be gradual.

“We’re already thinking about what we want to do down the road,” said Doody. “I have an architect engaged in the project, and we’re exploring some ideas and possibilities that we’ll present to the German Village Commission, who we have great respect for.”

As for the legendary turtle soup, they’re keeping it. But other items, like the veggie quesadilla, are getting axed. Doody said he’s reducing the size of the menu 20-25% in order to really focus on what’s actually selling. “It’s quality over quantity for me,” he emphasized.

And the burger program is also getting a facelift. They’ll be getting fresh baked burger buns down the street from Lindey’s, and adding more burger options, including smashburgers. “We’re going to zero in on the basics,” he told us.
