Local bakery cookie inspired by ICE-detained 5 year sells thousands, ships nationally

A cookie created by a long-standing Columbus bakery in response to the detainment of a five year-old in Minnesota by ICE agents has exploded in popularity, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

According to co-owner Emilie Smith, the Original Goodie Shop created a cookie on Jan. 27, inspired by the blue bunny hat hat worn by five year-old Liam Liam Adrian Cornejo Ramos, who, alongside his father, was detained by ICE agents in Minnesota on Jan. 20 and was later released on Feb. 1.

$1 from from each cookie sold will support Central Ohio families, split between Community Refugee & Immigration Services (CRIS) and Our Helpers.

And those small donations add up fast. According to a social media post yesterday, the Columbus bakery had already sold 3,700 cookies in less than a week. What’s more, they’re even being purchased and shipped throughout the country.

“Our first shipments are going out today. 130 cookies will be going to Ohio, Florida, California, Washington DC, New Jersey and Tennessee. We have also added them to DoorDash, UberEats and GrubHub,” Smith said.

She said that, even though it’s led to longer hours for herself and other Original Goodie Shop workers, they’ll continue to sell the cookies at least throughout this week, and potentially even longer.

“We are not capping daily sales. Our goal is to make as many as we possibly can,” the bakery posted on its Facebook page.

Smith added that the cookies, which are created using a custom 3D printer mold, are the bakery’s best-selling fundraiser cookie of all time.

“This is our best Donation Cookie in the history of donation cookies, and in just 5 days. Previously, it was the Courage Kitty made to bring awareness about child bullying. We had sold 2,381 in a little over 2 weeks,” she said.

Pre-orders for the bakery’s new Donation Cookie are encouraged. To place an order, call 614-488-8777 or email tremontgoodieshop@gmail.com. Include your name, pick up date and time, and the number of cookies you’d like to order.
