Iconic Ohio pizzeria closing Central Ohio location; Sandwich shop taking over

A longstanding Ohio-born pizzeria has closed the doors of its Westerville location, and Columbus sandwich spot Fat Arnie’s will be taking over the space with its firs-ever brick and mortar restaurant, the eatery announced on Instagram yesterday.

The new concept, Fat Arnie’s Provecho, is a spinoff concept of Fat Arnie’s Sandwich Shop. It will be located at 20 S. State St. in Westerville, the former home of DiCarlo’s Pizza, which has closed its Westerville store.

“First things first: Fat Arnie’s Sandwich Shop isn’t going anywhere. We’ll still be serving the sandwiches you know and love, along with the staples and rotating specials that have always been part of what we do. At the same time, Fat Arnie’s Provecho will be its own restaurant with a different menu and its own identity,” the post reads, noting Fat Arnie’s Provecho will be a takeout and delivery focused restaurant.”

According to Fat Arnie’s, Dicarlo’s “transitioned out of this space as a part of a larger growth strategy focused on expansion and real estate ownership. That decision created the opportunity for us to bring our concept to Uptown.”

In 2022, DiCarlo’s closed, later reopening in 2024 under direct management from the DiCarlo family.

The restaurant is best known for its “Ohio Valley Style” pizza: a thin, rectangular crust baked only with sauce, then, after it’s out of the oven, cheese is added.
