Founder of popular Columbus-born donut chain passes away
The founder of a popular local donut chain has died.
According to a social media post from Jolly Pirate Donuts, the brand’s owner and founder, Nick Soulas, passed away on Jan. 30,
“Beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and godfather was deeply loved by his family and local communities,” the post reads. “May his memory be eternal. He will be greatly missed by so many.”

Soulas opened the first location of the old-school donut shop in Whitehall in 1961, at the corner of South Hamilton Road and Fairway Boulevard.
At its peak, Jolly Pirate operated locations in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. Today, the brand exists exclusively in Central Ohio. Jolly Pirate Donuts has storefronts in Grove City (3118 Southwest Blvd.), Newark (175 S 30th St) and Reynoldsburg (6689 E Main St).
