Longtime Columbus steakhouse abruptly closes

Jonathan Keilholz

Mitchell’s Steakhouse has announced it has closed its Downtown Columbus location at 45 N. Third St., ending a run that dates back to 1998 inside the historic Law and Finance Building.

“After many wonderful years serving the downtown Columbus community, Mitchell’s Steakhouse on North 3rd Street has made the difficult decision to close its doors,” Shah Ghani, Chief Operating Officer of Landry’s Restaurant Group, said in a statement provided to 614NOW. “We are deeply grateful to our loyal guests and team members for the privilege of being part of so many meaningful moments over the years.”

An additional Landry’s representative told 614Now that the closure is effectively immediately.

The company said it is working to transition employees to nearby sister restaurants, including Mitchell’s Steakhouse Polaris, Columbus Fish Market and Mastro’s Steakhouse.

The restaurant became a longtime fixture of Downtown Columbus dining, known for its steaks, seafood and extensive wine list. It served business lunches, convention visitors, celebrations and pre-event dinners.

Columbus restaurateur Cameron Mitchell launched the Mitchell’s Steakhouse brand in 1993. The concept later expanded to Downtown Columbus in 1998, when Mitchell’s Steakhouse opened inside the historic Law and Finance Building, which was completed in 1927, the same year and in the same style as the LeVeque Tower. Mitchell sold the Mitchell’s Fish Market and Mitchell’s Steakhouse brands to Ruth’s Hospitality Group in 2008 as part of a $92 million deal. Today, the Mitchell’s Steakhouse brand is owned and operated by Landry’s, which acquired Ruth’s Hospitality Group in 2023.
