New owners unveil Old Mohawk expansion plans

In July, NCR Ventures purchased Old Mohawk, a historic German Village restaurant, but the improvement process may be more than they bargained for.

Owner Rick Doody proposed a new expansion plan for the restaurant located at 819 Mohawk St. after discussing the required maintenance with the architects, so they can move forward with bringing the building into good condition.

“We weren’t going to propose anything right now, but the building is in such bad shape that we, unfortunately, might end up doing things twice,” Doody said.

Beyond the heavy maintenance of the foundation, roof, electrical, and HVAC systems, the plan is to utilize the restaurant’s partially vacant south grass lot, including additional space for the dining room, a larger patio area, and an expanded basement.

NCR and the Columbus-based architecture firm, Design Collective, submitted the plan to the city for conceptual review, and Old Mohawk’s architects will be attending the German Village Commission next Wednesday for a preliminary meeting.

“Everybody in the village loves to improve their homes, right? There’s a lot of home improvements.
I hope the commission has the same perspective on restaurants and businesses,” Doody said.

Currently, Old Mohawk’s fate rests in the hands of the commission, and 614Now will provide updates at a later time.
