Popular Columbus sandwich shop bringing new burger concept to the Short North
Buck City Sammies is branching out into burgers.
According to co-owner Chad Berton, the guys behind some of Columbus’ favorite sandwiches are bringing a long-term burger pop-up to the Short North.
The aptly-named Buck City Burgers will hold its first pop-up at Bodega (where it will be located for the foreseeable future). The concept will debut on March 5, and will run Thursday-Saturday weekly.

Berton said he and fellow co-owner Nile Woodson were considering buying a space to launch a new burger bar, although they had to put this concept on hold to open Buck City’s concession space inside of the Schottenstein Center. He then received an invitation from Bodega owner Brian Swanson to create a pop-up inside the popular Short North beer bar, and he hasn’t looked back since.
“I actually used to work in that kitchen in Bodega, so it was an immediate ‘yes’ for me,” he said. “It’s the perfect time to test out the concept, and there’s no better combo than bars and burgers.”
The new pop-up will not discriminate between burger styles, leaning into a variety of different options.
“We want to take a different approach to what a burger restaurant is,” Berton said. “Everybody has been super hung up on smash burgers, that’s all you find. They’re great, and we’ll have one, but we wanted to do a more all-encompassing menu.”
Buck City Burgers will offer a Bodega-style chopped cheese (pun intended, Berton said), Double Wagyu smash patty, a patty melt and a dry aged tavern-style burger that Berton said was “a little more gourmet.” It will also offer chili cheese fries.
The long-term goal for the new burger concept is a brick and mortar space of their own, but Berton plans to be at Bodega for at least the immediate future, whether that ends up being weeks, months or more.
