New grocery store/art gallery opens

A new local grocery store and gallery has opened on the Near East Side of Columbus.

Inspired by the work of activist Carl Brown, who brought food access to King-Lincoln neighborhoods nearly a century ago, AVENEU is continuing his legacy at its 1017 Mt. Vernon Ave. location

AVENEU, founded by Azubuike Akunne, officially opened on June 22 with the mission of providing an accessible but curated experience in the heart of Columbus.

The grocery store features unique products from a blend of diverse cultures, including a bulk section providing everything from nuts to black beans, dried fruits, granola, and more. AVENEU also accepts SNAP and EBT to ensure their groceries are accessible to all.

AVENEU also has implemented a gallery space highlighting both local and international artists, with a particular emphasis on work that connects to our neighborhood, culture, and community.

“Our goal is to use art as a way to bring people into the space, make art feel accessible, and create an environment where people can engage with both the beauty of the work and AVENEU’s larger story of bringing healthy, fresh groceries to a historically underserved community,” said Akunne.

The gallery plans to host events in late 2026, possibly early 2027, but AVENEU currently has artwork reflecting history on display, now available to view while you shop.
