The ‘Worst Pizza in America’ is within driving distance of Columbus

I’m typically of the opinion that even pizza that’s well below average is still very good. Since the bar for almost any kind of pizza is already so high, if you take it down a couple of pegs, you’re still within the range of a positive experience.

But today, we’re not talking just below average. A Pennsylvania pizzeria considered by many as “the worst pizza in America” is within driving distance of Columbus. Would you try it? Should you?

Located in Altoona, Pennsylvania, approximately 4 and a half hours from Columbus, 29th St. Pizza Sub and More is a proud purveyor of Altoona-style pizza. If this style is new to you, it’s probably time to buckle up.

At first glance, Altoona-style pie looks more like a 4 a.m. attempt at garlic bread than pizza. Originating in the (currently defunct) Altoona Hotel in the 1950s, the style tops a thick piece of Sicilian-dough with tomato sauce, salami, green pepper, and American cheese. Yes, you read that correctly.

Surprisingly, the style became so popular in the area that other local eateries began serving the style. There are still multiple spots serving it up today, but 29th St. Pizza Subs and More is widely considered the definitive Alton’s-style pizza spot.

While some consider it to be the worst pizza in the country, others, like The Takeout, believe how the style actually tastes far better than it looks. Curious? Terrified? A little bit of both? We are too, and there’s only one way to find out.
